Strong quenching of the fluorescence of aromatic hydrocarbons by tertiary aliphatic amines has been observed in solution at room temperature. Accompanying the fluorescence quenching of aromatic hydrocarbons, an anomalous emission is observed. This new emission is very broad, structureless and red-shifted from the original hydrocarbon fluorescence.

Kinetic studies indicate that this anomalous emission is due to an exciplex formed by an aromatic hydrocarbon molecule in its lowest excited singlet state with an amine molecule. The fluorescence quenching of the aromatic hydrocarbons is due to the depopulation of excited hydrocarbon molecules by the formation of exciplexes, with subsequent de-excitation of exciplexes by either radiative or non-radiative processes.

Analysis of rate constants shows the electron-transfer nature of the exciplex. Through the study of the effects on the frequencies of exciplex emissions of substituents on the hydrocarbons, it is concluded that partial electron transfer from the amine molecule to the aromatic hydrocarbon molecule in its lowest excited singlet state occurs in the formation of exciplex. Solvent effects on the exciplex emission frequencies further demonstrate the polar nature of the exciplex.

A model based on this electron-transfer nature of exciplex is proposed and proves satisfactory in interpreting the exciplex emission phenomenon in the fluorescence quenching of aromatic hydrocarbons by tertiary aliphatic amines.

A pre-column derivatization method for the sensitive determination of aliphatic amines using the labeling reagent 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole-9-ethyl chloroformate (BCEOC) followed by HPLC with fluorescence detection and APCI/NIS identification in positive-ion mode has been developed. The chromophore of 2-(9-carbazole)-ethyl chloroformate (CEOC) reagent was replaced by the 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole functional group, which resulted in a sensitive fluorescence derivatizing reagent, BCEOC, that could easily and quickly label amines. Derivatives were stable enough to be efficiently analyzed by HPLC and showed an intense protonated molecular ion corresponding m/z [M + H](+) with APCI/MS in positive-ion mode. The collision induced dissociation of the protonated molecular ion formed characteristic fragment ions at m/z 264.1, m/z 246.0 and m/z 218.1, corresponding to the cleavages of CH2CH2O-CO, CH2CH2-OCO, and N-CH2CH2O bonds. Studies on derivatization conditions demonstrated that excellent derivatization yields close to 100% were observed with a 3 to 4-fold molar reagent excess in acetonitrile solvent, in the presence of borate buffer (pH 9.0) at 40 degrees C for 10 min. In addition, the detection responses for BCEOC derivatives were compared with those obtained with CEOC and FMOC as labeling reagents. The ratios I-BCEOC/I-CEOC and I-BCEOC/I-FMOC were, respectively, 1.40-2.76 and 1.36-2.92 for fluorescence responses (here, I was the relative fluorescence intensity). Separation of the amine derivatives had been optimized on an Eclipse XDB-C-8 column. Detection limits calculated from an 0.10 pmol injection, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, were 18.65-38.82 fmol (injection volume 10 mu L for fluorescence detection. The relative standard deviations for intraday determination (n = 6) of standard amine derivatives (50 pmol) were 0.0063-0.037% for retention times and 3.36-6.93% for peak areas. The mean intra-and inter-assay precision for all amines were <5.4% and 5.8%, respectively. The recoveries of amines ranged from 96 to 113%. Excellent linear responses were observed with correlation coefficients of >0.9994. The established method provided a simple and highly sensitive technique for the quantitative analysis of trace amounts of aliphatic amines from biological and natural environmental samples.

To study the complex formation of group 5 elements (Nb, Ta, Ha, and pseudoanalog Pa) in aqueous HCI solutions of medium and high concentrations the electronic structures of anionic complexes of these elements [MCl_6]^-, [MOCl_4]^-, [M(OH)-2 Cl_4]^-, and [MOCl_5]^2- have been calculated using the relativistic Dirac-Slater Discrete-Variational Method. The charge density distribution analysis has shown that tantalum occupies a specific position in the group and has the highest tendency to form the pure halide complex, [TaCl_6-. This fact along with a high covalency of this complex explains its good extractability into aliphatic amines. Niobium has equal trends to form pure halide [NbCl_6]^- and oxyhalide [NbOCl_5]^2- species at medium and high acid concentrations. Protactinium has a slight preference for the [PaOCl_5]^2- form or for the pure halide complexes with coordination number higher than 6 under these conditions. Element 105 at high HCl concentrations will have a preference to form oxyhalide anionic complex [HaOCl_5]^2- rather than [HaCl_6]^-. For the same sort of anionic oxychloride complexes an estimate has been done of their partition between the organic and aqueous phases in the extraction by aliphatic amines, which shows the following succession of the partition coefficients: P_Nb < P_Ha < P_Pa.

The reduction of benzenesulfonyl derivatives of n-butylamine and N,N-di-n-butylamine with nitro substituents at the 2, 3 and 4 positions of the phenyl ring in N,N-dimethylformamide is reported. The N,N-di-n-butyl-4- and N-n-butyl-2-nitrobenzenesulfonamides are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first one, at about -0.90 V vs. SCE, a reversible one-electron process, gives a stable anion radical. The second reduction step at -1.70 V vs. SCE leads to cleavage of the S-N bond in good yields (> 70%). It is shown that the reduction of the N-n-butyl-3- and N-n-butyl-4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide is different, with three reduction steps. The first reduction step occurs with the formation of an unstable anion radical, which decomposes via N-H bond cleavage. The reduction of this sulfonamide anion occurs at -1.16 V vs. SCE and the third cathodic step arises at -1.70 V vs. SCE when the remaining radical anion is reduced to its dianion. The S-N bond cleavage is rapid but is always a minor process. The mechanisms of the reduction are discussed.

A simple, sensitive, and mild method for the determination of amino compounds based on a condensation reaction with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC-HCI) as the dehydrant with fluorescence detection has been developed. Amines were derivatized to their acidamides with labeling reagent 2-(2-phenyl-1H-phenanthro-[9,10-d]imidazole-1-yl)-acetic acid (PPIA). Studies on derivatization conditions indicated that the coupling reaction proceeded rapidly and smoothly in the presence of a base catalyst in acetonitrile to give the corresponding sensitively fluorescent derivatives with an excitation maximum at lambda(ex) 260nm and an emission maximum at lambda(em) 380nm. The labeled derivatives exhibited high stability and were enough to be efficiently analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Identification of derivatives was carried out by online post-column mass spectrometry (LC/APCI-MS/MS) and showed an intense protonated molecular ion corresponding m/z [MH](+) under APCI in positive-ion mode. At the same time, the fluorescence properties of derivatives in various solvents or at different temperature were investigated. The method, in conjunction with a gradient elution, offered a baseline resolution of the common amine derivatives on a reversed-phase Eclipse XDB-C-8 column. LC separation for the derivatized amines showed good reproducibility with acetonitrile-water as mobile phase. Detection limits calculated from 0.78 pmol injection, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, were 3.1-18.2 fmol. The mean intra- and inter-assay precision for all amine levels were < 3.85% and 2.11%, respectively. Excellent linear responses were observed with coefficients of > 0.9996. The established method for the determination of aliphatic amines from real wastewater and biological samples was satisfactory. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The mechanical and adhesives properties of epoxy formulations based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A cured with various aliphatic amines were evaluated in the glass state. Impact tests were used to determine the impact energy. The adhesive properties have been evaluated in terms single lap shear using steel adherends. Its durability in water at ambient temperature (24 degrees C) and at 80 degrees C has also been analyzed. The fracture mechanisms were determined by optical microscopy. It was observed a strong participation of the cohesive fracture mechanisms in all epoxy system studied. The 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine epoxy adhesive and piperidine epoxy adhesive presents the best adhesive strength and the largest impact energy. The durability in water causes less damage to piperidine epoxy networks. This behavior appears to be associated with the lower water uptake tendency of homopolymerised resins due to its lower hydroxyl group concentration. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4 and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses. Mass spectrometry and other techniques have been employed to identify products of the nucleophilic addition of aliphatic amines to C60 and C70 in solution phase.

Amines and their derivatives are basic structural motifs in natural products and pharmaceuticals and highly versatile building blocks for various organic substrates. Direct reductive amination (DRA) is a convenient method for the preparation of secondary and tertiary amines owing to its operational simplicity. In an effort to develop a simple and convenient procedure for direct reductive amination reaction, we focused our study on search for a mild and efficient organocatalytic system. In the literature, there are many reports concerning DRA between aldehydes or ketones and either primary amines or secondary aliphatic amines. But there are no reports concerning DRA between aldehydes or ketones and secondary aromatic amines. In this study, we have developed a highly practical method for the synthesis of tertiary amines by the direct reductive amination of ketones and secondary aromatic amines with tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) as the catalyst using HSiCl3 as the reducing agent in dichloromethane (affording up to 92% yield). This method can be carried out under mild conditions and is compatible with many functional groups. A variety of ketones were efficiently aminated with secondary aromatic amines to afford the corresponding amines in good to excellent yields. Starting from chiral sulfoximine, we designed and synthesized a series of new sulfoximine derivatives and tested their efficiencies as asymmetric organocatalysts for the reduction of imines, which, unfortunately, only exhibited low catalytic activity and enantioselectivity.

As the incidence of depression increases, depression continues to inflict additional suffering to individuals and societies and better therapies are needed. Based on magnetic resonance spectroscopy and laboratory findings, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) may be intimately involved in the pathophysiology of depression. The isoelectric point of GABA (pI = 7.3) closely approximates the pH of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). This may not be a trivial observation as it may explain preliminary spectrophotometric, enzymatic, and HPLC data that monoamine oxidase (MAO) deaminates GABA. Although MAO is known to deaminate substrates such as catecholamines, indoleamines, and long chain aliphatic amines all of which contain a lipophilic moiety, there is very good evidence to predict that a low concentration of a very lipophilic microspecies of GABA is present when GABA pI = pH as in the CSF. Inhibiting deamination of this microspecies of GABA could explain the well-established successful treatment of refractory depression with MAO inhibitors (MAOI) when other antidepressants that target exclusively levels of monoamines fail. If further experimental work can confirm these preliminary findings, physicians may consider revisiting the use of MAOI for the treatment of non-intractable depression because the potential benefits of increasing GABA as well as the monoamines may outweigh the risks associated with MAOI therapy.
